Maria Antònia Munar, former president of the Consell de Mallorca and the Balearic Parliament, served several sentences totaling 14 years in prison for various corruption cases. However, ten years after her imprisonment, the debt of 12 million euros owed to the public coffers of the Balearic Islands has still not been settled, nor have some of the seized assets been valued for restitution.
Munar’s main convictions
- Make-up case (2012): The Provincial Court of Palma sentenced Munar to five and a half years in prison for continued embezzlement, prevarication, fraud against the administration and false documentation. This case involved the diversion of 240,000 euros of public funds to an audiovisual company indirectly controlled by Munar.
- Can Domenge case (2013): In 2013, Munar was sentenced to six years in prison for fraud and disclosure of secrets in the irregular awarding of the Can Domenge land, sold for 30 million euros, although its real value was twice as much.
- Bribery in Can Domenge (2018): In 2018, the Supreme Court upheld a sentence of two and a half years in prison and a fine of €5 million for a bribery offense. According to the proven facts, Munar and two other Consell officials demanded €4 million from a businessman to award him the land of Can Domenge.
Third degree in prison and millionaire debt
Munar entered prison on July 24, 2013. In 2020, he obtained the third penitentiary degree, which allowed him access to the regime of semi-liberty. The Provincial Court justified this decision by pointing out his age, his lack of current public charges and the low probability of recidivism. Despite the payments made, which only amount to a minimal part, the debt of 12 million euros remains unpaid. In addition, some assets seized for restitution have not been valued or liquidated, prolonging the lack of economic resolution in one of the most notorious corruption cases in the Balearic Islands.
Refounding of Unió Mallorquina
While Munar is in jail, his former party, Unió Mallorquina (UM), has begun a process of re-foundation. A management board was appointed in February 2024 and is working on the organization of a congress, scheduled for the first quarter of 2025, which seeks to relaunch the party as a regionalist force in the Balearics. In addition, UM is in talks with PI (Proposta per les Illes) for a possible merger. Both formations aspire to consolidate a regionalist bloc that integrates independent groupings in Mallorca.
