No luxuries, no amenities, far from urban areas and cheaper than the high bill of Ibiza. The Consell de Mallorca, by demand of Vox, has launched in Mallorca in one of the wings of the military barracks of Son Tous a center with 16 places for unaccompanied migrant minors (‘menas‘). At the moment, due to the infrastructure it is expandable up to 140.
The Majorcan Institute of Social Affairs (IMAS) saves 40% of the cost per foreign ward compared to current expenses, reducing the bill to 140 euros per day.
And if these figures are compared with the costs in Ibiza, the difference is striking. The management of the ‘menas’ in the outsourced centers in charge of the SAMU Foundation – for a contract for the residential foster care of 32 places distributed in 4 lots – costs the Consell Insular 9,000 euros per month per adolescent, according to the president Vicent Marí .
This implies about 300 euros per day per ‘mena’, i.e. 53% more expensive than the bill in Mallorca.
If you compare them with the adolescents housed in the center for minors ‘Padre Morey’, located on the grounds of Sa Coma, there Ibiza comes out ahead. The costs show an average of 3,378 euros per minor per month, either for ‘menas’ or for the island’s minors in a state of vulnerability housed there, according to the 2026 budget.
In this case, the bill for the Consell Insular de Ibiza is lower: each adolescent costs just over 112 euros per day.

A rebate
On Wednesday, Guillermo Sanchez, president of IMAS, after visiting the new facilities, remarked that the center allows “to economize and be more efficient”.
“In terms of costs, it means a reduction of 40% per place,” reported Ultima Hora. And it details that taking in minors who have recently arrived in the Balearic Islands in this center means a reduction from the 239 euros that it costs per day to maintain a foreign ward to about 140 euros.

The three-story military barracks has a total of five wings: four on the two upper floors and one on the ground floor, which is now fully operational. At the entrance to the premises, there is a small office that will be used for meetings and tutorials.
The part that has already been fitted out required an estimated investment of between 40,000 and 50,000 euros. This area has been fitted out with dormitories with bunk beds, common areas, dining room, laundry, classrooms and offices, as well as some 5,000 square meters of landscaped areas.
IMAS currently has 430 “menas” under tutelage, according to Última Hora.
