Ibiza is facing a costly battle against discarded chewing gum on its streets, revealing a problem of incivism that exceeds financial and aesthetic expectations. An awareness campaign driven by the Town Hall has revealed the staggering scale of this pollution.
The figure is alarming: it is estimated that there are more than 600,000 chewing gums stuck all over Ibiza. What many consider an insignificant act of littering, has a monumental economic impact on the public coffers: removing a single piece of gum from the ground costs 1 €.
The concern expressed in the campaign is not only for the lack of education, but for the tangible damage this causes. Chewing gum not only litters the streets, but also damages the pavement and conveys a “bad image of our town”. In the video broadcast, one citizen captured the widespread sentiment by describing the situation as “How disgusting!”.
The main message is that the problem is a matter of “respect for the island”. With the enormous amount of money invested in the cleanup, potentially more than 600,000 €, citizens are invited to “think a little bit” about what could be done with those resources.
