The Ibiza Town Hall has started this Monday the construction of the new storm tank in Fray Luís de León street, a key infrastructure to improve the management of rainwater and reduce polluting discharges that affect the beach in heavy rainfall episodes. The action is financed with funds from the Sustainable Tourism Tax (ITS) and involves a total investment of 968,000 euros.
The project, awarded to the company Jaralia Integral SL, includes the creation of a lamination tank equipped with a desanding and degreasing system that will intercept the current rainwater collector before it flows into the sea. This system will retain the first rainwater, which is the most polluted, laminate the flow and then convey it to the sewerage and treatment network.
In addition, a new filtering well will be built to replace the overflow point located on the beach and a pumping system will be installed to evacuate the water stored in the tank to the treatment plant. This will prevent the rainwater network from being loaded and direct discharges to the sand, a recurring problem during heavy rainfall events.
According to the City Council, the infrastructure will allow:

Reduce polluting discharges to the beach.

Improve the quality of the water reaching the treatment plant.

Minimize the dragging of sands and sediments to the sea.

Ensure more efficient operation in heavy rain events.
The fourth deputy mayor and councilor for the Environment, Jordi Grivé, said that this work «reinforces the municipal commitment to the modernization of water infrastructure and coastal protection, moving towards a more efficient and sustainable management of rainwater in Ibiza».
