The Govern admits total blockage of the transfer of waste from Ibiza to Mallorca due to lack of parliamentary support

The future of the transfer of waste from Ibiza to the incinerator in Mallorca is once again up in the air. The Government admits that the process is paralyzed and that, for now, there is no legal framework that allows the implementation of the planned pilot plan. The responsibility, according to the vice-president of the autonomic Executive, Antoni Costa, lies in the votes against the left-wing groups and Vox in the Parliament, a decision that has left without effect the decree law that should enable the operation.

Costa explained that the decree of Strategic Projects, rejected on September 30, contained the necessary provision to give legal coverage to the temporary transfer of waste. Without this validation, the Government assures that it cannot carry out the pilot test or find regulatory alternatives: “We have studied all the options and none offers legal certainty,” he said.

Without parliamentary support, the Govern won’t make a move

The vice-president has been clear in this respect: the Executive will not bring the decree back to the autonomous Chamber if it does not have sufficient support. According to Costa, parliamentary support would be enough to immediately reactivate the mechanism that would allow to start the transfers between islands.

In addition to the point dedicated to waste, the decree included a second provision relating to a multi-annual agreement valued at 50 million euros destined to the Consell de Mallorca. This agreement was intended to compensate part of the investments made by TIRME, the company in charge of waste treatment, and to alleviate the costs of the process.

Ibiza still has no operational alternative

Until a new legal framework is approved, the Government admits that there is no immediate solution to activate the pilot plan. The paralyzation forces Ibiza to continue managing its waste without being able to rely on the Majorcan infrastructure, a situation that complicates the deadlines and plans to improve the island treatment.

Costa regretted the lack of political consensus and warned that the blockage “does not respond to technical criteria, but to a strictly political position”, which, in his words, harms the citizens of Ibiza and slows down a measure designed to relieve pressure on the island’s waste management system.
