No sign of Rafa Ruiz’s forced resignation: PSOE supports him

The Socialist Federation of Ibiza (FSE-PSOE) has issued a statement reiterating its full support for the former mayor of Ibiza and socialist spokesman in the City Council, Rafa Ruiz, after the opening of oral proceedings in the ‘ports case’, in which he is accused of the crimes of continued administrative malfeasance and fraud.

The communiqué makes no mention of the PSOE’s Code of Ethics, which states that a militant with a court order to open an oral trial must request voluntary resignation as a member and resign from public office. Instead, the FSE-PSOE stresses its confidence that the investigation will be archived or that Ruiz will be finally acquitted. What is certain is that the former socialist mayor of Ibiza, former secretary general of the socialist group of Ibiza and spokesman of the Socialist Group in the City Council of Ibiza, Rafa Ruiz, must resign from the position he still holds. This, at least, is determined without any doubt by the Code of Ethics and Conduct of the Socialist Party approved by the Federal Committee of the PSOE on March 18, 2023.

In the text, the party recalls that it is awaiting the resolution of the appeal filed with the Provincial Court, which requests the archiving of the court case against Ruiz in relation to the Ibiza Yacht Club. The PSOE argues that all decisions of Ruiz as mayor and member of the Board of Directors of the Port Authority were backed by technical reports that supported its legality.

It also notes that the former mayor acted in line with the political will of the island and national institutions: “Rafa Ruiz acted in response to the plenary agreements of the City Council of Ibiza, the Island Council, the Balearic Parliament and the Congress of Deputies, unanimously approved to defend the Yacht Club and port management to preserve the general interest, as well as social, cultural and sporting values of the city,” the statement details. The PSOE also calls on other political parties in Ibiza to support Ruiz, insisting that he fulfilled the political mandate unanimously approved at the time to defend the Club Nautico de Ibiza. For the moment, Rafa Ruiz continues as socialist spokesman in the City Council of Ibiza while the judicial process progresses.
