The Local Government Board of the Ibiza Town Hall has approved the resolution of a sanctioning file that imposes two significant fines on a developer who rented commercial premises as housing without proper authorization. In total, the sanctions amount to 100,607.56 euros, in what represents a new effort by the consistory to combat practices that affect access to legal housing in the city.
The first infringement corresponds to the carrying out of works without a license, which resulted in a fine of 75% of the value of the same, set at 67,071.71 euros, as established in article 167.1 of the Urban Planning Law of the Balearic Islands (LUIB). This non-compliance resulted in a financial penalty of 50,303.78 euros. The second fine refers to the change of use of the premises, which changed from a commercial space to a dwelling without the corresponding urban planning authorization, in breach of article 167.4 a of the LUIB. This fact entails another fine for the same amount, which brings the total fine to more than 100,000 euros.
Mayor’s statements and commitment to legality
The mayor of Ibiza, Rafael Triguero, has emphasized that the City Council will maintain a firm stance against this type of irregularities. “We must be forceful with illegal rentals,” Triguero has assured, adding that “Ibiza is a city to live in, and protecting housing is a fundamental priority for our government team.” These sanctions are part of a broader strategy of the consistory to ensure compliance with planning regulations and protect access to adequate and legal housing, avoiding the deterioration of the social fabric and the loss of essential public spaces.
