The hospitality sector in Ibiza takes an important step towards sustainability with the adhesion of more than 170 bars and restaurants to the campaign Hostelería #PorElClima, a national initiative that seeks to reduce the carbon footprint and promote responsible practices. This project, promoted by Coca-Cola, Ecodes Foundation and Hostelería de España, already has more than 1,300 participating establishments in the Balearic Islands and 13,500 throughout Spain. In Ibiza, the participating establishments have implemented nearly 974 measures aimed at optimizing the management of resources and minimizing their environmental impact. These actions include the use of LED lighting to reduce energy consumption, collaboration with local suppliers to reduce transport emissions, and the correct management and recycling of waste, such as glass.
Environmental and economic commitment
The campaign not only has an environmental focus, but also an economic one, helping venues to save costs while implementing sustainable measures. One of the highlights is the pilot program of climate bonds, which allows hoteliers to modernize their technologies with specialized advice, achieving a significant reduction in their emissions. Joan Roig, president of the Balearic Islands Catering Business Federation (Ferib), pointed out the importance of this collective effort, stressing that “it is an opportunity to recognize the work done by the sector and to continue promoting the commitment to the environment”.
A long-term commitment
The program also includes an evaluation of the carbon footprint before and after the implementation of the measures, offering establishments a roadmap to continue on their path towards decarbonization. According to the promoters, these actions not only benefit the environment, but also position Ibiza and the Balearic Islands in general as a benchmark in tourism sustainability. Since its launch in 2017, Hostelería #PorElClima has facilitated more than 13,500 venues in Spain to implement more than 210,000 climate actions.
