The president of the Balearic Government, Marga Prohens, has defended this Friday on Constitution Day the need to ensure the welfare of citizens, address challenges such as access to housing and transform the economic model of the islands, among other issues.
This was stated by the regional leader in a ceremony held at the Almudaina Palace in Palma for the 46th anniversary of the Spanish Constitution, which was also chaired by the delegate of the Government in the islands, Alfonso Rodríguez, and the president of the Consell de Mallorca, Llorenç Galmés. During his speech, Prohens has referred to challenges such as access to housing, “because the Constitution marks in Article 47 that it is a right and attributes to the administrations the obligation to promote the necessary conditions and establish the relevant rules to make it effective”. “That is where the Government is by promoting these conditions,” she added. The president also cited the need to transform the economic model of the islands and move towards sustainability as set out in Article 45 of the Spanish Constitution, and to guarantee the welfare of residents, which is also set out in Article 50 of the Magna Carta. Prohens also mentioned challenges such as the migratory crisis we are experiencing. “We cannot look elsewhere when the conditions are no longer in place to receive the most vulnerable in dignified conditions, and that is why it is so important that each level of the administration assumes its respective competences. “Yes, there is a consolidated migratory route. To deny this route is to deny the resources that we claim from the institutions and leave the administrations alone in the face of a phenomenon that surpasses us,” Prohens acknowledged. Another of the points she has addressed is the fight against gender violence and for the effective and real equality between men and women. She also applauded the progressive recovery of the woman stabbed last Sunday at the hands of her partner in Ibiza and once again condemned events such as these. The president of the Govern also appealed to the need to protect private property against illegal occupation. “I will not allow this community to be treated worse than any other, that is why I will defend the fiscal autonomy that allows lowering taxes, giving back to families part of their effort and improving public services, as well as recovering the rights of public professionals,” she said. During her speech, the regional head celebrated the coexistence from the freedom and plurality provided by the Spanish Constitution, which “is better than last year”, being more respectful and inclusive because it recognizes people with disabilities. “Yes, people with disabilities and nothing else,” he pointed out. “Today all democrats have much to celebrate,” concluded Prohens.
