In a scenario marked by political instability, the president of the Consell del Consell de FormenteraLlorenç Córdoba, has presented the budget for 2025, which amounts to 44,553,000 euros, an increase of 2.28% over the previous year. This announcement comes just a few days before his departure from the institution, after months of political tensions that have led to a motion of censure to be voted on December 27.
2025 numbers: a historic budget
The budget presented for 2025 is the highest in the historical series of the Consell Insular de Formentera and responds to the increase in tax collection, capital transfers and the allocation of European Next Generation funds. These resources will make it possible to make important investments in infrastructure, sustainability and public services. Spending on personnel stands at 19.9 million euros, representing 44.75 % of the total budget. In addition, it includes the 100 % implementation of the professional career, a plenary agreement approved in 2019 and which was initially planned for 2026.
4.07 million euros are earmarked for investment, complemented by European funds that will enable strategic projects to be carried out. Among the priorities are road improvements, renovation of drinking water infrastructures, urbanization of residential areas and the creation of a shelter home for unprotected minors.
Revenues and demands: financial balance amidst challenges
The Consell’s income comes from two main sources: municipal taxes, which will generate 21.4 million euros, and transfers from the State and the Autonomous Community, with 17.7 million expected by 2025. Córdoba pointed out that, despite the financial stability achieved, it is still necessary to negotiate new agreements with the Balearic Government to address pending challenges, such as the improvement of the road network and the refurbishment of critical infrastructures such as the Es Pujols sewage treatment plant. The increase in taxes is due, in part, to the implementation of the new garbage contract, which has increased waste management expenses. This increase has been reflected in the budget to guarantee the sustainability of the service.
Priority works and commitments to the island
Among the most important investments for the coming year are projects such as:
- Renovation of drinking water tanks in Sant Ferran and Ca Marí.
- Second phase of urbanization in Es Pujols and Ca Marí.
- Improvement of the accesses to the municipal soccer field.
- Creation of a foster home for minors.
- Rehabilitation of the house des Telégraf and Can Ramon.
- Investments in recycling plants and water supply in sports infrastructure.
The Consell will also continue to advance in the connection of the Ca Marí nucleus with the general sewage networks, financed through the Sustainable Tourism Tax.
A farewell in the midst of the political crisis
During the presentation, Cordoba acknowledged the difficult political situation that the Consell de Formentera is going through and justified the preparation of these budgets as an attempt to ensure administrative continuity and respond to the needs of citizens. “The interests of Formentera must be above any political interest,” he said. With the motion of censure scheduled for late December, the future of the Consell will be in the hands of a new administration. However, Cordoba expressed confidence that the projects presented can be approved and executed, regardless of the change in leadership.
