The Govern has launched an ambitious antenna installation plan with a budget of 12.4 million euros, co-financed with Feder funds 2021-2027. This project aims to improve the emergency communication network (TetraIB) and the intelligent sensor network (IoTIB), with a special focus on Ibiza and Formentera, the areas lagging behind in coverage within the archipelago. Currently, Ibiza has 7 antennas and 70% coverage, while Formentera has 3 antennas and 75% coverage. This plan will allow Ibiza to add 14 more antennas and reach 89% coverage, while Formentera will add a new antenna that will improve its coverage to almost 100%. These improvements in the TetraIB network are especially important to ensure an efficient response of emergency services in mass events, natural disasters or critical situations, particularly in areas with high tourist density.

Sensors to manage resources and gauging

In addition to improving emergency communications, the project envisages the expansion of the IoTIB network, which will focus on the installation of sensors capable of measuring beach gauging, monitoring water use in wells and managing other essential resources. The IoTIB network, which currently has 58 antennas, will reach 111 in 2027. These technological tools will not only provide valuable information for tourism management, but also for the sustainability of resources in the Pitiusas.

Antennas in public-private partnership

To carry out this plan, the Government has launched the Solidarity Antennas initiative, which seeks to use the rooftops of tall buildings, such as hotels and municipal spaces, for the installation of the equipment. This collaboration between public administrations and private companies will maximize the scope of the project without the need to occupy new public spaces.
