The Consell de Formentera has experienced this Friday a crucial change with the approval of the censure motion against Llorenç Córdoba, who has been replaced as president by Óscar Portasof Sa Unió. This move, backed by the abstentions of the PSOE and Gent per Formentera, puts an end to a stage marked by political tension and institutional paralysis, as noted by the socialist spokesman, Rafael Ramirez. During his speech after the extraordinary plenary, Ramirez has described this motion as the closure of a period that has led to the “discredit” of the Consell. “It is the end of a black period that we have lived in this institution, where it was already unable to fulfill its objectives and the mandate given to it by both the Law of Consells and the Statute of Autonomy,” he stressed. The spokesman recalled the negative impact of the report of the Monitoring Committee of the Code of Ethics, describing it as “49 pages of shame” that show the institutional crisis and the lack of action in the Consell during Cordoba’s mandate.
The PSOE and its role in change
Ramírez has underlined the “responsibility and generosity” with which the PSOE has acted in this process, by abstaining to facilitate the change without directly supporting the new president. “The citizens did not vote for us to govern Sa Unió, but faced with the responsibility of how the day to day was happening, we had to reach this exit,” he explained. According to the spokesman, the citizens of Formentera “did not deserve” to continue under a misgovernment that focused its attention on Cordoba’s personal problems instead of addressing the real needs of the population.
A government in minority and the possibility of consensus
With Sa Unió at the head in minority, the political future of the Consell will depend on the capacity for dialogue and agreements. Ramírez has indicated that the PSOE is willing to collaborate in those policies that are coherent and benefit the citizens. In addition, he highlighted the open attitude of Portas in his first interventions, contrasting it with the previous management of Córdoba, whom he accused of hiding information and not assuming responsibilities. However, the socialist spokesman also pointed out the uncertainty regarding the role that Córdoba will play as councilor after his dismissal, since his position could influence the support for the new government.
