Next year starts in the Balearic Islands with the regional budgets extended, a scenario that will materialize this January 1 after the lack of consensus to approve new accounts for 2025. The decision, taken by the government led by Marga Prohensresponds to the impossibility of reaching a parliamentary agreement after breaking ties with Vox, its former investiture partners.
A scenario that seeks calm
The extension of the 2024 accounts is the second case of this type in the history of the Balearic Islands, after what happened in 2010 under the mandate of the socialist Francesc Antich. From the Govern, Prohens has launched a message of tranquility to the citizenship, affirming that the measure will not have “perceptible effects” in the public services while working on the elaboration of new accounts that, he assures, will be ready in the first months of the new year.
The challenge of negotiations
With Vox ruled out as an ally, the Popular Party finds itself in the need to reach consensus with the opposition to unblock the 2025 accounts. However, the positions seem to be at odds. Marga Prohens has reiterated that any dialogue must respect “the red lines” of the PP program, which complicates the possibility of a pact with the left-wing forces. For his part, from MĆS per Mallorca, spokesman LluĆs Apesteguia conditioned any negotiation to the elimination of “any trace of Vox” in the policies of the Government. Meanwhile, from the PSIB, Iago Negueruela has urged the Govern to do “serious work”, criticizing the lack of immediate action and regretting that “nothing will be done in this Autonomous Community in a month and a half”.
An uncertain fiscal start
The Regional Ministry of Economy, Finance and Innovation will publish in the next few days an order that will allow managing the budget extension retroactively from January 1, ensuring the continuity of public services and essential programs. In the meantime, the Executive faces the challenge of moving forward with new accounts in a political context marked by polarization and mistrust. The outcome of these negotiations will be crucial to define the course of the Balearic Islands in 2025.
