On January 2, shortly before midnight, Formentera welcomed Alaia Ríos Isanoa, the first formenteresa of 2025. With a weight of 2,960 grams and an assisted euthyroid delivery with epidural anesthesia, Alaia became the first daughter of Ángela Isanoa and Darío Ríos, a couple of Colombian origin who celebrated the arrival of their little girl at the Hospital de Formentera.
A professional team at the service of new life
The delivery was attended by a multidisciplinary team from the Hospital de Formentera, which included midwife Ana Olmedo, nurse Roger Bertrand, nursing care technician Tamara Ayala, anesthesiologist Cristina Ferrando and gynecologist Maialen Sáez de Vicuña.
This first birth of the year not only marked a special moment for the family, but also for the hospital, which reported an increase in deliveries during 2024.
An upturn in births in Formentera
Last year, Formentera Hospital attended 38 births, 18.75% more than in 2023, when 32 were recorded. Of these births, nine were by cesarean section and 29 were normal deliveries, reflecting an increase in the cesarean section rate from 12.5% in 2023 to 23.6% in 2024. This uptick comes after a progressive decline since 2021, when 67 deliveries were attended at the center.
The Pitiusas Islands star in the first and last births in the Balearic Islands
The beginning of the year 2025 has been marked by births in the Pitiusas. Dylan Luis Valdés Morel, born on January 1 at the Can Misses Hospital in Ibiza, was the first baby of the year in the Balearic Islands, while Alaia Ríos closed this insular ranking. Alaia, along with Dylan and other babies born in the first hours of the year in Mallorca and Menorca, represents the joy of a beginning full of life and hope for the families of the islands. The hospital and the Pitiusas Islands celebrate a beginning of the year with a special touch thanks to these births that mark a cycle full of expectations.
