The Balearic Government has announced the tender to prepare a digital census of facilities and sites with asbestos in the Balearic Islands, with the aim of removing this material before 2028. The measure responds to the need to comply with state regulations on waste and contaminated soils, facilitating the process for public administrations and building owners.
An accessible and updated registry
The project, which will use artificial intelligence and geolocation technology, seeks to identify all public and private buildings that still contain asbestos. The census will be integrated into the general viewer of the IDEIB (Spatial Data Infrastructure of the Balearic Islands), which will allow easy access to information and better planning for its removal.
As explained by the general director of Circular Economy, Energy Transition and Climate Change, Diego Viu, the aim is to facilitate compliance with national regulations and provide municipalities and the private sector with a useful tool to identify and manage these facilities. Currently, only the municipality of Ibiza has completed this process.
Project deadlines and requirements
The deadline for submitting bids by companies interested in developing this census will end on January 22. The company awarded the contract will have a maximum of six months to complete the work, which must comply with the criteria established by the Ministries of Energy Transition, Health and Labor. The census will include both public and private buildings and will establish a schedule of actions to remove asbestos progressively before 2028, as required by the Law on Waste and Contaminated Soils for a Circular Economy.
Aid for asbestos removal
The Government has also announced the call for specific subsidies aimed at public administrations and the private sector to cover the costs associated with the removal of this hazardous material. These grants will complement the effort to identify and manage the affected sites. The digital census is one of the key measures to move towards the total elimination of asbestos in the archipelago and ensure compliance with regulations, while protecting public health and promoting sustainability in the Balearic Islands.
