This Sunday, January 19, 2025, the Municipal Sports Field of Formentera has released its new covered bleachers. The inauguration, led by the president of the ConsellĆscar Portas, and the Councilor for Sports, Hugo MartĆnez, was attended by representatives of the SD Formentera club and numerous attendees who celebrated this milestone. Ćscar Portas stressed that these facilities are a response to a historical need raised by sports clubs. “Today we culminate a collective effort, which symbolizes how working together can transform our island,” he said. The infrastructure, with capacity for 918 people and 10 adapted places, marks a before and after in the conditions to enjoy sports on the island.
More than sport: a space for the community
The construction will not only benefit sporting events, but is designed to host cultural activities, concerts and other community gatherings. According to Portas, this reinforces the Consell’s strategy of promoting sustainable and deseasonalized tourism, attracting visitors in less crowded seasons. Antoni Roig, president of SD Formentera, expressed his gratitude to the Consell and emphasized that this new infrastructure will allow matches to be enjoyed in optimal conditions, regardless of the weather. “It is an important day for all of us who live and breathe sport in Formentera,” he commented.
A project committed to sustainability
The development of this project, which is part of the Tourism Sustainability Plan for Destinations (PSTD) 2021, has been financed with a total investment of close to 2.7 million euros. Of this amount, 1.6 million euros were allocated to the construction of the stands thanks to funds from the Sustainable Tourism Tax (ITS). In addition, a photovoltaic roof installed on the stands, financed with 1.067 million euros from European Next Generation EU funds, stands out for its commitment to energy efficiency.
An inauguration full of emotion
The day also served as a stage for the presentation of the SD Formentera teams, who played a 3rd Federation match against CD Llosetense, attracting numerous spectators who were able to try out the new seats for the first time.
