The talented Okuda San Miguel has presented this Tuesday an ambitious project to revitalize the historic center of Sant Antoni de Portmany. It is an intervention located along Santa Agnès street, which connects environment and people transforming this space into a great tourist asset.
The presentation has been framed within the week of the week of the International Tourism Fair (Fitur) 2025 held in Madrid. Therefore, it was attended by Okuda San Miguel, the mayor of Sant Antoni de Portmany, Marcos Serra, and the Councillor for Tourism, Development of the Local Economy and Festivals, Miguel Tur. Thus, the historic center of Sant Antoni will become the great canvas for this artistic intervention from February 18. Thus, it uses art to redefine the urban space. From the City Council detailed that “Santa Agnès street will become a living canvas, where culture and community merge to celebrate creativity and diversity. Sant Antoni becomes a symbol of change, demonstrating that color can be the engine of a new era of prosperity.” “This project symbolizes the full chromatic circle because, in a way, it tries to welcome all kinds of genders, race and cultures,” explained the artist.
In addition, he said that “I am very happy to do this work because it is the first time I do a continuous work, in length I think it is the longest. Normally they are vertical and this time it is on the ground, it is the first work that will be stepped on by many people and then observed from up close”. On a conceptual level, Okuda San Miguel said that “it symbolizes this multiculturalism that is, in a way, the pass of diversity. I am also interested in using color as a tool to change this environment and this public space.” “The idea is that people are on the street observing the street. Not only the cell phone, but we are full of advertising around. In the end we have very much inside all the brands that bombard us. Somehow this is raising our voice for more culture, for more art in the streets and, above all, for people to enjoy the environment and for it to inspire them,” he said. This art project of the City Council is also part of a comprehensive urban renewal that includes the construction of a boulevard in Vara de Rey, an art gallery, the revitalization of the old town, the conversion of businesses in the West End and improvements to the facades.
