The former president of the Consell de Formentera, Llorenç Córdobahas launched harsh criticism against the current government of Sa Unió in his first plenary session outside the presidency. Córdoba has stated that the new team, led by Óscar Portas, “has collided with reality” by presenting only three proposals, two of which have been rejected by the plenary due to lack of consensus.
According to the former president, the government of Sa Unió “has not known how to negotiate or talk with the other political forces”, which has led to a failure in the approval of key measures. Cordoba has pointed out that, since the beginning of the institutional crisis that led to the motion of censure that removed him from the presidency, Sa Unió has acted with arrogance and has chosen the wrong strategy to govern in minority.
Failure in management and lack of electoral proposals
Llorenç Córdoba has criticized that, after seven months in government, the Sa Unió team “has not presented any proposal of its electoral program” and that the only concrete action they have taken to the plenary has been “to provoke changes in the power structure”, instead of promoting measures for the benefit of the citizens. The former president has stressed that, with eight councilors, three vice-presidencies and a greater number of positions of trust than ever, the government of Sa Unió “has not been able to carry out its own projects” and continues without presenting initiatives that respond to its electoral commitments. “They are demonstrating that they do not know how to govern,” said Cordoba, assuring that Thursday’s ordinary plenary session was a clear demonstration of their lack of leadership and their lack of knowledge of what it means to govern in a minority.
Tension in the debate on the port of La Savina
One of the most controversial points of the plenary has been the proposal of Gent per Formentera on the management of the port of La Savina. The proposal sought to urge the Port Authority of the Balearic Islands (APB) to halt the award process and open a public participation process. The Sa Unió government team had assured that it would hold a government meeting to negotiate a possible agreement, but this meeting never took place. Cordoba has denounced that he was not included in the talks despite his experience as former president of the Consell and as a former member of the APB Board of Directors. In the final vote, the initiative of Gent per Formentera and the PSOE was tied with eight votes in favor and eight against, which led the president of the Consell, Óscar Portas, to use his casting vote to overturn the proposal. According to Cordoba, this decision “marks a 180-degree turn” in Sa Unió’s position on the port, since until now all political forces had maintained a common line on this issue.
Cordoba warns that Sa Unió will have to learn to reach consensus
After the plenary session, Cordoba insisted that the government of Sa Unió must accept that it does not have an absolute majority and that if it wants to move forward with its management “it will have to learn to reach a consensus”. The former president has reminded that they have two options: to negotiate with the parties of the left, or with himself and his group, to build a stable majority. However, he warned that, until now, Sa Unió has preferred to act unilaterally, which has led them to be in a minority and without real management capacity. The plenary has also served for the inauguration of Belén Palerm Rodríguez as new councilor of Equality, Citizen Participation and Primary Sector, thus consolidating the government structure of Sa Unió, although without clearing the doubts about their ability to manage in a scenario of political fragmentation.
