The City Council of Ibiza has removed today about 20 tons of accumulated waste in the area of Es Soto, where a special operation has intervened both by land and by sea to remove materials deposited especially in the surrounding caves, an area that had already recorded fires and pollution episodes on previous occasions.

Complex operation in a difficult-to-access environment
The cleaning tasks have required a deployment of between 13 and 14 workers, who have worked throughout the day to recover this enclave located under Dalt Vila. According to the municipal technical team, most of the material removed corresponded to manure, accumulated over a long period in various cavities of the slope.
Due to the difficulty of access by land, part of the intervention has been carried out from the sea, using a boat equipped with a crane that has allowed to lift and move the waste of greater volume. This action has been essential to complete the total removal of the material stored inside the caves and areas of difficult handling.
Sealing of caves to avoid new accumulations
Parallel to the cleaning, the City Council is proceeding to close the caves where most of the waste was dumped, a measure aimed at avoiding future accumulations of waste and reducing environmental risks, especially the fires already recorded in the area of Es Soto. The Consistory considers this sealing a decisive step to guarantee the protection of the natural environment.
“The intervention in Es Soto was urgent and necessary. We could not allow to maintain a focus of environmental and safety risk as the one that had been generated. With this cleaning and the closure of the caves we take an important step to protect the environment and prevent problems such as fires that we have already suffered on other occasions,” said the fourth deputy mayor, responsible for the work of recovery of natural areas.
