The operating room and the delivery room of the Hospital de Formentera are still closed since October 15, more than three weeks after an environmental fungus was detected in the antechamber of both facilities, as a result of the humidity caused by the DANA Alice.
During this time, only vital emergencies have been attended, while the rest of the interventions and deliveries have been referred to the Can Misses Hospital in Ibiza, generating discomfort among users of the public health service.
Due to the lack of information, a patient has transferred to La Voz de Ibiza her indignation at the lack of communication from the hospital: “Today a friend of mine was scheduled for an operation and yesterday they had not even called her to let her know that the operating room was still closed”, she complained.
“System disaster,” he complained.
The Health Area of Ibiza and Formentera explained to this media that“we expect preliminary results this week from the last culture performed last Friday”.
They added that“if everything is correct, it will open this week“.
The Health Councilor’s disclaimer
The situation of the Formentera Hospital has been addressed this Tuesday in the plenary session of the Balearic Parliament, where the Minister of Health, Manuela Garcia, has recognized the problems, although she has tried to downplay their seriousness.
García pointed out that all healthcare indicators have improved during the current legislature: the delay in consultations has been reduced by two and a half months, more professionals have been incorporated (7% more) and surgical activity has increased by 23%.
Regarding the closure of the operating room, the councilor explained that after the DANA Alice appeared humidity that led to the appearance of fungus in the surgical area, which forced the temporary closure.
“There are no bacteria, but fungi have a bad habit of growing in three weeks,” he said. Garcia has reiterated that the spaces are available only for cases of vital urgency, not for scheduled surgeries or deliveries.
The PSOE denounces that “nothing works”.
The socialist deputy Irantzu Fernandez has questioned the councilor during the plenary and has denounced that “nothing works” in the hospital of the smaller island.
Fernandez has criticized that the problems are not limited to the operating room, but that there have also been deficiencies in the 061 base, such as the lack of hot water, and has questioned whether the Conselleria is satisfied with the current situation.
