The regional senator of the Popular Party, Miquel Jerez, denounced this Tuesday in the Senate that, almost two months after the torrential rains that hit Ibiza, the central government “still does not appear” and has not enabled the necessary state aid to alleviate the damage suffered by families, businesses and professionals on the island.

“Ibiza is still waiting”: Vicent Marí demands investments and the declaration of a catastrophic zone in a letter to Pedro Sánchez
In an intervention during the control session, Jerez addressed the Minister of the Interior, Fernando Grande-Marlaska, to demand the declaration of Ibiza as an area seriously affected by a civil protection emergency, a measure that -according to him- the Executive is still not processing, despite its legal obligation. “What are they waiting for? Many families and self-employed people are still unable to recover normality”, criticized the senator.
“Mr. Minister, you continue to leave people behind. For many, the dana has not been a storm, but a sentence,” insisted Jerez, who regretted that “the government is not doing its duty.”
Municipalities and the Government have responded
The popular representative contrasted the “passivity” of the central Executive with the “speed” of the Balearic Government and the institutions of Ibiza, stressing that the municipalities of the island have advanced more than three million euros in emergency actions. In addition, he recalled that the Govern has approved five million in direct aid, which, he said, could begin to be collected before Christmas through the Consell de Ibiza.
“We are not talking about charity, but about a legal obligation contained in the Law of the National Civil Protection System,” Jerez recalled, while demanding an “immediate reaction” from the Council of Ministers.
Criticism of institutional disloyalty
Jerez also appealed to “institutional loyalty” in his plea, warning the Government that “they can tighten the political game with the PP institutions, but they cannot be disloyal to the citizens who have suffered a tragedy”.
In his speech, he ended his speech with an allusion to past statements made by Minister Marlaska:
“Remember that arrogant phrase ‘if they need help, let them ask for it’? Well, here we are. To ask for it on behalf of Ibiza, of its self-employed, of its companies, of its families. Enough is enough,” he concluded.
