The situation of homes in flood-prone areas has become a concern after the lethal DANA that occurred in Valencia weeks ago. For this reason, the Balearic Parliament seeks to prohibit the legalization of out-of-order housing in flood zones in the framework of the urban amnesty contemplated in the administrative simplification decree.
Flood zones in Ibiza and Formentera
Now, what are the flood zones in Ibiza and Formentera? The Ministry for Ecological Transition and Demographic Challenge has shared a tool to efficiently and quickly check if your home is located in a flood zone. By accessing the ministry’s website, you can access the National Flood Zone Mapping System (SNCZI), where updated data on areas at risk of river flooding, among other related information, is available. It is a cartographic map of the whole of Spain, to which numerous search filters can be applied, including one that colors the areas depending on the level of risk.
How do I know if my house is in a flood zone?
In the tool, at the top of the screen there is a “Service Tree” button and, when clicked, a menu will be displayed with all the parameters that can be applied to the search. First, select the item “Areas of significant potential flood risk“, then search among the “Risk Maps”, and there enter the section “Fluvial flood risk T=10 years”. The last step will be to choose the “Risk to population” option, which will apply a final filter to the search and paint in color the areas that have significant potential for flooding due to excess rainfall or flooding every 10 years. It may take a few seconds to fully load the map. From there, you can search for all areas at risk in both Ibiza and Formentera.
