Unemployment registered in the offices of the public employment services fell in the Balearic Islands in December by 914 people compared to the previous month, representing a drop of 3.02%. In year-on-year comparison, unemployment fell by 887 people (-2.94%), placing the total number of unemployed at the end of the year at 29,305, below the 30,000 barrier. This is reflected in the data published this Monday by the Ministry of Labor and Social Economy.
By sectors, Services concentrated the largest number of unemployed, with 22,323 people, after registering a decrease of 850 unemployed in November (-3.67%). It is followed by Construction, with 3,181 unemployed, 23 less than the previous month (-0.72%). On the opposite side are Agriculture, which remains unchanged with 341 unemployed, and Industry, which has 1,245 unemployed after reducing by 33 people (-2.58%).
As for the distribution by sex, of the 29,305 unemployed registered in December, 16,472 were women, 511 fewer than in November, while unemployed men totaled 12,833, following a reduction of 376 persons.
With this drop, the Balearic Islands now have five consecutive years of declines in unemployment, consolidating a positive trend in the islands’ labor market.
Youth unemployment, among those under 25 years of age, stood at 4,242 persons in December, of which 2,320 were men and 1,922 women. Unemployment among the foreign population reached 7,183 persons, after falling by 4.28% with respect to November, although with a year-on-year increase of 2.29%.
Hiring
In the last month of the year, 17,841 contracts were registered in the Balearic Islands, a figure practically identical to that of the same month in 2022. Of these, 10,375 were permanent contracts, a slight increase of 0.19%, while temporary contracts totaled 7,466, 0.21% less.
