Formentera’s ways to avoid a summer without beach bars

As from Royal Decree 994/2022, of November 29, from July 1, 2023, the transfer of functions and services from the General State Administration to the Autonomous Community of the Balearic Islands in the area of coastal planning and management has been formalized.

This responsibility falls on the Conselleria del Mar y Ciclo del Agua. The Dirección General de Costas y Litoral, precisely, is in charge of the processing of authorizations and concessions.

At the time, the Consell has chosen to process beach authorizations to tender sunbeds and umbrellas. These have a vital difference: the AOTs have an obligation to dismantle for 6 months, unlike the concession titles that only have to be removed for one month between January 15 and February 15, something that the current chiringuitos failed to comply with.

The authorization is simpler to process, although the number of years that can be granted is limited to a maximum of 4 seasons.

“If they want to get to next summer with beach bars, the authorization should ask for it and then make an express tender,” says a source familiar with the case.
