Images from security cameras at the Can Misses Hospital have made it possible to reconstruct the moments prior to the death of a 46-year-old patient on Monday morning, when the man fell from an exterior wall about five meters high in the parking area of the Emergency Department.
According to sources from the Health Area of Ibiza and Formentera, the incident occurred at around 6:15 a.m., when the patient was in the emergency room.
The images of the security cameras show how the man jumped to the outer wall with the apparent intention of sitting on top, but lost his balance and fell into the void, according to Diario de Ibiza. As a result of the impact, he suffered a serious craniocerebral traumatism and was immediately attended to by medical personnel, although he died shortly after despite the efforts made.
Testimony of a witness
A direct witness to the event has recounted the minutes prior to the tragedy. According to her testimony, the man was admitted on a stretcher in the emergency room next to his daughter’s and, for about an hour, “he kept shouting and asking for help”, even trying to pull out his intravenous lines.
“I even called, because he was trying to rip out his tracks and I stopped a nurse to warn her that he was trying to rip out his tracks and that he was calling for help, and no one went. Within an hour or so, no one came,” the woman said.
The witness explained that at one point he went outside to get some air and, shortly thereafter, the man left the box through another door. That’s when the fall occurred. “He ripped out his tracks, went outside by himself and that’s when he fell, but he was admitted,” she said.
According to his account, the deceased was known in the neighborhood and had a history of substance abuse. “It is true that he is a drug addict from the neighborhood, I knew him,” he added, also pointing out that before rushing past a member of the SAMU, who “looked at him out of the corner of his eye as if to say ‘here he is again’.”
Hospital sources confirmed that the man was a recurrent patient of the emergency department and had no fixed address. He was a frequent visitor to the hospital, and on this occasion he decided to go outside for a moment, a common practice among some patients waiting for assistance in the emergency department.
