Laura, the tenant of the house located in Es Novells 55in Santa Eulària des Riu, decided to open the doors of her house to Mariana, an Argentine compatriot who worked with her in the island’s street markets. “I offered her a place because she had nowhere to go. She seemed like a good person, who could help me with some expenses of the house, then I said what can go wrong?”, said the affected in an exclusive dialogue with La Voz de Ibiza. What began as an act of good faith turned into a “hell” that lasted for months. According to Laura, the problems began when Mariana wanted to register at the address, a procedure that had to be authorized by the owner of the property. “When I told her that I couldn’t help her with that, that’s when everything changed. She started to treat me badly, to tell me that she would not leave and that, if I touched anything of hers, she would report me,” she has added. “If you keep bothering me, the only thing you’re going to gain is to become homeless because I’m going to fuck up your life. I have nothing to lose, I only have two suitcases, so shut your mouth and don’t say anything”, was the threat that, according to Laura, the squatter made when she tried to confront her.

Coexistence became impossible from July onwards. The woman accumulated bags of garbage in the garden, with dozens of plastics and glass bottles (some broken) scattered around the grounds. “With my daughters we couldn’t walk without running into the filth this woman left behind,” Laura has confessed. “As soon as I took courage I made a complaint, but at the local police station they have told me they can’t do anything. I feel that no one is protecting us,” she lamented. She then consulted different lawyers to see what she could do, but they all told her that it was going to “be difficult to get her off your back.”“That’s when I realized that the law in Spain is made to defend these types of people,” he has criticized. With no concrete possibilities of resolving the conflict through legal channels, Laura turned to the company APD Security Iberia, which specializes in evictions of all types of properties. Since last Saturday, two people moved into an annex to the house and exerted pressure (without violence) for the woman to leave the place, which happened in the last few hours.“My daughters were telling me ‘mom, please get this woman off my back’. It ‘s been a long time coming, and only today after 6 months I feel that I am beginning to see a little bit of light. It has been months of anguish and helplessness,” Laura lamented.
